Do quartz worktops need sealing?

One of the many plus points of quartz worktops is that they are non-porous and therefore generally do not need sealing. This low-maintenance worktop option can truly withstand the kitchen traffic of any busy family household whilst also looking the part.

In this article, we’re going to explain a little more about why quartz worktops don’t need sealing and what you can do to ensure that you never have to deal with a stain.

Why are quartz worktops non-porous?

Quartz worktops are made up of around 93% quartz. The rest of the worktop is made up of a small portion of resin which creates a natural seal and makes the worktop non-porous. Microscopic pores that would ordinarily sit on the top of natural stone are instead filled with crushed bits of quartz. These bits of crushed quartz prevent spilt liquids from seeping in and staining the surface.

This sets quartz apart from other natural stone worktops such as marble and granite. Proud owners of marble and granite worktops will need to consider sealing them, as these are amongst some of the more porous material options.

Can quartz worktops be sealed to prevent staining?

It is pretty common for natural stone worktops to need sealing to prevent staining. However this is not really necessary with quartz worktops. The hardy and durable nature of quartz means it has earned its spot as one of the most popular choices for kitchen and bathroom worktops.

That being said, we don’t want to lure you into a false sense of security. Quartz worktops aren’t totally invincible. Whilst the risk of quartz worktops staining is very low, spillages should always be tackled straight away to keep your worktop in the best condition possible. Common household favourites such as coffee, tea and red wine can stain even the hardiest of surfaces if left long enough.

Should I seal my quartz worktops?

If you really want your quartz worktops sealing, there’s nothing stopping you. It’s a step that you can take to give your worktops an extra layer of protection against stains and damage. Plus, it can be pretty inexpensive to have done.

Many people have questions about whether sealing quartz worktops will dull the shine or alter the appearance. This isn’t true. Sealing your quartz worktops shouldn’t alter the way they look. Sealed or not, your quartz worktops will continue to shine for as long as you keep them fresh and clean!

Caring for quartz worktops

Quartz worktops are super simple to care for. However, there are certainly some things you should be aware of to ensure that they look their best for years to come. Firstly, clean your quartz worktops daily with warm soapy water or non-abrasive cleaning products. Avoid any products that contain bleach and chlorine.

Attend to any spillages quickly – just in case! And avoid leaving your quartz worktops wet, particularly around the sink area. It’s generally a good idea to prevent direct contact with liquids as much as possible.

Whilst your quartz worktops can withstand a bit of heat, it’s not advised to put hot pans directly onto the surface if it can be helped. The resin in quartz worktops can withstand temperatures of around 150 degrees. However, it’s important to remember that a sharp difference in temperature (between hot and cold) can damage the surface.
